Cecilia Stephens is a painter/weaver/printmaker.She takes her inspiration from the landscape. Painting directly in a given area she then going on to interpret this in a woven form.
The process leads to a more textured, three-dimensional result. A fascination with the effects of light on the landscape seems to be enhanced by the interweaving of coloured weft materials through what might be called a ‘veil’ of warp threads.
This is a quality that the paintings cannot achieve, something that is unique to the woven piece and captures a transient moment in a vivid manner. This can alter when the viewer moves in relationship to the changing colours of the vertical warp threads.
Cecilia takes control of the whole process, dying her threads and painting and texturing the paper that is used in combination with yarn and fleece in her weft. Finally the pieces are mounted and framed like paintings.
The works range in price according to size and time taken in construction. Each piece is a ‘one-off’.
Cecilia is a member of Ards Arts Collective and Seacourt Print Workshop.
She exhibits regularly and opens her studio, with an accompanying exhibition, every August.
